Updated PDI Chart to Teaching and Learning Approaches Chart

PDI v3 to Teaching-Learning-Approaches-chart-v1

PDI 2013 chartThe PDI chart was created for a reason: to clarify the differences in these terms. In 2010, the National Ed Tech Plan defined all three of these terms as they are related to instruction. So in 2013, Kathleen McClaskey and I needed to emphasize the differences: Personalization is learner-centered. The other two, Differentiation and Individualization can be teacher-centered. Yet, in many lessons, a teacher may be addressing all three of these approaches. You may be arriving at this page from our Slideshare page with the PDI chart.

Personalization vs Differentiation vs Individualization (v3) from Barbara Bray

In 2017, Kathleen and I decided to close our business, Personalize Learning, LLC so we could go in different directions. I was receiving so many questions and concerns about the chart and what that meant for their teaching practice. I invited over 100 educators from around the world to be part of a focus group to review the chart and other resources.

I created a new page on the Teaching and Learning Approaches chart and the details here. https://barbarabray.net/2018/05/22/teaching-and-learning-approaches-chart-v1/

The more I learn from you, the more I learn and want to share back with you. I appreciate all the feedback, comments, and more to update this chart.

Please spread the word about this updated version of the chart and link to the new page at http://bit.ly/TLapproaches. Share the ways you are using this chart in the comments below and in social media. My Twitter handle is @bbray27 and hashtag is #rethink_learning. If you plan to make multiple copies of this chart or use it in a publication, you can email me directly at barbara.bray@gmail.com for permission.

About the author

Barbara Bray is a Story Weaver, empowerment coach, award-winning author, international keynote speaker and podcast host helping people turn life’s hardest chapters into their most meaningful work. As the creator of the Grow Your Why movement, she guides women, educators, and leaders to transform adversity into purpose, clarity, and momentum.

Her message isn’t theoretical; it’s lived. Barbara learned later in life that she survived childhood polio, a truth her parents kept secret so she would never see herself as a victim. That foundation of resilience carried her through multiple reinventions, including a career-ending injury and a lung cancer diagnosis that reshaped how she thinks about time, truth, and legacy.

For more than three decades, Barbara has worked at the intersection of storytelling and transformation, helping people reclaim their voice and direction. Through her books, podcast, and coaching, she challenges a common belief: resilience isn’t about bouncing back—it’s about growing forward, on purpose.
